Mod Case Study: From First Pallet to Repeat Container — Step by Step

We ship mod to distributors in very different markets, and the same five questions come up almost every week. Rather than answer them in email each time, we have written them out properly here.

Modelling a Healthy Margin

Margin on mod is rarely lost at the till. It is lost through dead stock, returns and emergency air freight. A slightly higher landed cost with predictable lead time usually beats the cheapest quote on the spreadsheet.

Indicative reference points for planning purposes: entry tier from USD 1.43 per unit at 1000 units, mid tier at USD 1.08, and volume tier at USD 1.28 for full container quantities. These figures move with specification, packaging and freight, so treat them as a shape rather than a quote.

Reading a Mod Spec Sheet

A written mod specification should be short enough to read in a minute and precise enough to argue about. If a factory cannot confirm a number in writing, assume the number is whatever is cheapest that week.

When we write a mod specification with a distributor, we fix four things first: the resistance band, the liquid capacity tolerance, the puff count methodology and the packaging master carton. Everything else can flex without changing the customer experience.

Quality Control in Practice

The cheapest quality control step is a retained sample. Keeping three sealed units from every mod batch costs almost nothing and turns any dispute into a simple comparison instead of an argument over photographs.

AQL sampling gets a lot of attention, but for mod the more useful habit is simply measuring the same three things on every single batch. Trend lines catch problems that pass/fail checks miss.

Trends Worth Watching

Assortment rationalisation is the quiet trend in this category. Shops that cut their mod range from twelve lines to five well chosen ones often report higher total sales, not lower.

Where Mod Sits in the Range

Category planning for mod works best when you map it against three shopper types: the restocker who already knows what they want, the switcher who wants something stronger, and the explorer who buys on flavour name alone.

One useful exercise: list every mod line you stock and mark the last date each one sold at full price. Anything without a recent full price sale is taking space from something that would use it better.

Turning Mod Into Repeats

A mod display that answers strength and flavour without staff involvement outsells a prettier one that does not. Most customers will not ask, so the fixture has to do the work.

Online, shoot mod at a consistent scale across the range. Customers compare by eye, and inconsistent product photography creates returns that have nothing to do with the product.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you hold stock for regular customers?

For established programmes we can reserve production slots and, in some cases, hold finished mod stock against a forecast. It removes most of the lead time risk from a reorder and is worth discussing once volumes are stable.

How do you handle a short shipment?

Cartons are counted and weighed before dispatch and the figures are shared with you. If something is short on arrival, the packing record and the carrier documentation are both available, which keeps the claim straightforward.

How should mod be stored?

Cool, dry and out of direct sunlight. Heat and light are the two things that shorten shelf life fastest. Rotate stock by batch code rather than by arrival date, and keep cartons off concrete floors in humid warehouses.

Can the packaging be customised?

Yes. Most mod programmes use private label packaging once volumes justify the printing plate. We supply dielines, check your artwork for print issues and hold approved files so reorders need no new setup.

Can I visit the production facility?

Yes, and we encourage it for larger programmes. Visits are most useful when you already have a draft specification, because you can then check the specific processes behind the numbers you care about.

Next Step

We would rather quote you accurately and lose the order than quote optimistically and lose the relationship. Ask us the awkward questions early.
